A feedback equation based on Sverdrup’s derivation of critical depth is rederived. The equation makes it possible to estimate the density of the standing crop that will maximize production in any given depth of mixing with respect to light. This gives insight into whether light, or other nutrients, grazing, etc. are limiting.
