Microgram amounts of organic carbon in seston and periphyton samples were measured with an infrared analyzer after combustion with an induction furnace. Replicate standards gave the same results to within 3%. Replicate seston samples prepared by filtering 135 ml of Castle Lake water or 500 ml of Lake Tahoe water usually agreed within 10%; replicated periphyton samples agreed within 20%.
