This work shows that the apparent oxygen utilization (AOU) expresses the oxygen utilized between the surface and some point within the oceans, even though the dissolved oxygen content at that point results not only from utilization by oxidation but also from the mixing of waters. This result is applied to an interpretation of the concept of preformed phosphate.
