Vacutainers, pre‐evacuated glass tubes with heavy septa, into which gas is introduced through a double‐ended needle, are used to collect and store gas samples for determining acetylene‐reduction nitrogen fixation. Incubation vessels consisting of heavy plastic bags secured to collared glass tubes fitted with septa have proved useful for determining nitrogen fixation by macrophytes.
