Paired surface samples collected within and outside of large patches of Sargassum in the northwest Sargasso Sea in November 1965 contained reactive phosphorus in concentrations generally higher than those previously reported. Sargassum patches apparently form a chemical microenvironment significantly richer in reactive phosphorus than open surface waters of the Sargasso Sea. Diffusion of P‐PO 4 from Sargassum masses may increase its concentration in immediately surrounding waters.
