A series of media compatible to the survival of Daphnia as well as to the growth requirements of Chlorella has been formulated, and some of the relationships of ion balance and salt tolerance of Daphnia have been explored. Potassium salt solutions were toxic unless combined with sodium salts of equal or higher concentration. Nitrate ion was variably toxic. The compatible media were developed by 1) reducing K + and increasing Na + so that Na + became the predominant cation; 2) reducing NO 3 ‒ to a minimum consistent with Chlorella requirements and increasing Cl ‒ so that it became the predominant anion; and 3) eliminating extraneous toxic factors from distilled water and noninert polyethylene containers.
