Distribution of surface chlorophyll a in a shallow, eutrophic lake in north‐central Iowa was adequately predicted by an effective chlorophyll‐displacement index (EDI) and a displacement vector (DV), which were dependent upon velocity, duration, and directional stability of wind prior to chlorophyll collection dates. Four general wind conditions, determined by the magnitudes of EDI and DV, are considered, and four general conditions of chlorophyll movement are postulated as a direct result of the wind conditions.
