The theory developed by Beuttel and Brewer for an instrument to measure the total scattering coefficient is re‐examined to determine its usefulness in sea water. It is found that, with a properly designed instrument, one can use this principle to measure the forward scattering coefficient with an accuracy better than 10% if the total attenuation coefficient of the water does not exceed 2.1/m. The errors that could be introduced by the size and shape of the source or of the beam of detection arc examined and discussed.
