Some aspects of the movements of the winter flounder Pseudopleuronectes americanus (Walbaum) were studied by means of tag‐recovery data. No gear selectivity by sex was demonstrated for recaptured fish nor was any association found between the size of the individual and distance of recapture from the release site. An analysis of the movements of tagged individuals away from the breeding area indicates some movement to the east of the release point but this may be due to unequal fishing effort. An attempt is made to explain the return of winter flounder to the coast by means of random search postulating the presence of a reflecting barrier.
