Many of the spectral data on the optical constants of natural water are suspect because of errors introduced by light “leakage” outside the stated band of the filter used. The magnitude of this error is computed for a specified water sample under specified natural lighting when measured with a specified detector and filter. The errors are large even for measurements at shallow depths. Methods for avoiding this error are suggested.
