Archeological sources attest to the presence of Mycenaeans on the shores and islands of western Anatolia from the beginning of the 15th cent. to the end of the 12th cent. BC. Inferences about the nature of contact between Hittites and Mycenaeans at the “periphery” of both cultures can also be made on the basis of written sources, assuming that the name Ahhiyawa in the Hittite texts does in fact refer to Mycenaeans. This contribution presents an overview and interpretation of Hittite texts containing the word Ahhiyawa and archeological sources that shed light on Mycenaean presence in Anatolia and Hittite presence in the Aegean area. It also schematically discusses the nature of contact between Hittites and Mycenaeans and points to certain questions arisin
