With more than 60% of forest area and around 25% of grassland, Slovenia is a nice example of a ‘green’ country. The situation is different in the mountain areas, where higher altitude, lower average temperature and active slope processes cause diffcult growth conditions. In this paper some characteristics of the screes are presented, while the vegetation belts are described in detail. Vegetation belts were determined by means of feldwork, i.e. inventory of vegetation species on twelve screes of the Karavanke, Julian and Kamnik-Savinja Alps
