This study investigates the consequences of first-language literacy acquisition in environments in which a person's first language does not also function as the official language, specifically focusing on the Slovene linguistic and cultural minority in Italy. The main assumption is that minority members, especially those who have completed the studies in a school with minority medium language, have gained a good level of functional literacy in both the minority and the majority language. Nevertheless, limited opportunities of using the first language in public and in the workplace strongly inhibit the use and development of functional literacy skills in Slovenian and offer more opportunities to develop the language skills in Italian
