In this paper we present resilience as a research phenomenon, appearing in scientific literature in conjunction with positive patterns of recovery or adaptation identified in difficult life situations. We emphasize the paradigm shift from risk to resilience, manifest in pioneer studies and strongly connected with lifelong learning principles. Based on a review of the related literature we present four waves of resilience research and summarize the key findings, necessary to understand the modern concept of resilience. On these conceptual premises we suggest a Slovenian term for resilience. Research on resilience clearly delineates the guidelines for prevention practice. Fostering of resilience is a highly dynamic interactive process, operating at a deep structural, eco-systemic, human level and  closely connected with formal and informal learning processes. In this conceptual framework, we highlight the most significant protective processes and mechanisms, which scholars have defined as external and internal strengths, resources and supports that promoting resilience in difficult life situations. We conclude the paper by outlining the characteristics of a  “resilient” person
