The paper gives a wide-ranging view of different forms of violence and types of abuse, showing them to be a social, not merely an individual, problem. It examines various approaches taken by researchers in different disciplines, including anthropology and sociology, and concludes that interdisciplinary studies tend to be the most productive, as they generate a broad range and scope of ideas on violence and abuse and their effects on the society as a whole. The author explores the complexity of cause and effect in violence, and points out that we are all capable of committing violence as well as experiencing it at any time. It is, therefore, of great importance that practitioners seeking to help victims of abuse should not be judgemental, and that they are aware of the effects of abuse on individuals and communities in which they live
