The paper discusses the conceptual and legal basis for adult education in public libraries. In the second part it presents the results of the empirical research investigating interest to participate in different fields of education. The study included 943 adult users of Ljubljana City Library and showed the differences in the expression of interests in relation to sex, age and educational level of the users
