In the last two decades we witnessed uncontrollable economic growth resulting from increases in stock and real estate market prices, exponential growth of production and higher consumption. In 2008, however, we plunged into an economic crisis, similar to the one in 1929, and today, due to the developments in Greece, we are facing in Europe the threat of a crisis resembling that of Germany in 1930. Management and financial experts have had, and still have, a rather decisive role in economic growth (and economic collapse), therefore, it is vital that today, in the time of great uncertainty and slow economic and social recovery, we should establish what the fundamental premises of our society and its operations are. This article endeavours to define the fundamental concepts underlying the contemporary postmodern and postindustrial society (its economic and educational system), such as, knowledge, truth, work, sense of purpose, added value (of an innovation), employee job satisfaction, etc. In dealing with these concepts we proceed from the standpoints of life counseling, connecting it with adult education for career development and personal growth
