The article centres on the discussion of the concepts of “the Way”, “Virtue” and “Good” in the teachings of two Tokugawa Confucians – Itô Jinsai and Ogyû Sorai – and draws attention to one of the key moments which, despite their common critical direction and their established notional repertoire, sets these teachings apart in a fundamental way. While Jinsai, in keeping with the teachings of Mencius, discusses the three notions from the perspective of the universal good of the Way of Heaven and man’s natural moral ability, Sorai, as a radical critic of both Jinsai’s as well as the teachings of Zhu Xi’s School of Structure, subjects the three notions to complete politicization
