Aim: Lately, vaginal hysterectomies (VH) are being performed\udmore frequently than abdominal hysterectomies (AH) for benign\udpathologies. Even then, total laparoscopic hysterectomy (TLH) has\udbeen widely done because of its shorter recovery time. In this study,\udwe compared the results of AH, VH and TLH performed in our clinic.\udMethods: In this study, we retrospectively evaluated the\udhysterectomies performed between December 2010 and\udDecember 2011 for benign uterine pathologies in the Obstetric\udand Gynecology Clinic at Bağcılar Training and Research Hospital.\udIt is a retrospective study. During this time, 139 AH (56.8%), 61\udVH (24.9%), and 45 TLH (18.3%) were done. Data including age,\udparity, length of hospital stay, change in hematocrit, and length of\udthe operations were recorded. Statistical analysis was performed.\udResults: The average age of patients who underwent AH, VH and\udTLH was 49.5.0, 59 and 51.6, respectively. The average parity was\ud3.0, 4.5 and 4.3, respectively. The average length of hospital stay\udwas 3.8, 3.8, and 2.9 days, respectively. Duration of operation\ud(139.27+/-36.48 min) in TLH group was longer than in AH\ud(66.91+/-11.64 min) and VH groups (47.50+/-9.6 min) (p<0.01).\udChanges in hematocrit were similar in the groups. Complications\udrelated to TLH seem to be a little more than other procedures.\udConclusion: Nearly 70% of all hysterectomies in USA are\udmade abdominally. The American College of Obstetricians and\udGynecologists (ACOG) recommended VH as approach of choice for\udbeing associated with better outcomes and fewer complications\udthan either laparoscopic or abdominal approach. Although our\udclinic is new, the total number of VH and TLH are similar to that of\udAH. (The Medical Bulletin of Haseki 2013; 51: 112-5
