Aim:Accumulating knowledge suggests that low 25-hydroxyvitamin\udD3 concentrations may be inversely related to diabetes mellitus\udand insulin resistance. We planned to investigate the association\udof 25-hydroxyvitamin D3 levels with some antropometric and\udmetabolic data in type 2 diabetic patients.\udMethods: In our study including 101 patients with type 2 diabetes\udmellitus and 60 healthy controls, after making comparisons of\ud25-hydroxyvitamin D3 levels and other parameters of two groups,\udwe made correlation analysis in our diabetic patients. Later, we\udgrouped our patients according to their 25-hydroxyvitamin D3\udlevels and made comparisons.\udResults: We found significantly lower 25-hydroxyvitamin D3 levels\udin type 2 diabetic patients than in controls. In correlation analysis,\ud25-hydroxyvitamin D3 levels were found to be negatively correlated\udwith insulin homeostasis model assessment index. When we\udgrouped our diabetic patients according to 25-hydroxyvitamin D3\udlevels, no difference was demonstrated in any parameters.\udConclusion: This study suggests that 25-hydroxyvitamin D3\udlevels are significantly low in type 2 diabetes mellitus. In patients\udwith type 2 diabetes, once vitamin D deficiency exists, metabolic\udparameters do not worsen according to decreasing vitamin D\udlevels. Since hypovitaminosis D also exists in non-diabetics, we\udrecommend vitamin D supplementation in our population . (The\udMedical Bulletin of Haseki 2013; 51: 89-94
