A baiting method was tested in April-October 1989 in Orleans Forest, France. Forty trap nets with diffusers containing the aggregation pheromone Stenoprax were positioned 30 m apart along four tracks separating stands of mature (120 yr) Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris) trees from young oak (Quercus robur) or mixed mature pine/oak stands. Diffusers were collected and tested weekly at ages 0-8 weeks. Those with attractant only 1 wk old captured 74% of total scolytids ; the figures for 2...5-wk-old attractant were 16.6, 4.7, 2.2 and 1.0%, respectively. Problems raised by the rapid-aging of pheromones, and the implications of this for sampling strategies are discussed.
