It is generally accepted that the study of linguistics and literary theory can benefit from each other. The question asked in this article is whether the principles and methods of the developing discipline of text linguistics will have any implications for the better understanding of literary texts. It is argued that the study of text linguistics - because of its interdisciplinary nature - certainly has the potential for this, but that knowledge of the principles and methods of this discipline should not be regarded as essential for the obtaining of any insights in literary texts
