The assessment of management skills, as a technique neglected by the nursing profession, is discussed. It forms a logical starting point to management training and development, and can be defined as a technique to pinpoint grey areas in management skills. The general methods in management assessment are discussed with special reference to the assessment centre technique. Specific management behaviour dimensions are presented and defined. Lastly and empirical study is reported wherein a mini-assessment centre was conducted on a group of nursing personnel. Although no behaviour assessment could objectively be reported, the participant’s reactions to the assessment are reported. From this it seems that management skill assessment can be seen as a valid technique in ascertaining management training and development needs in nursing
