Petrophysical characteristics of diatreme-facies kimberlites from Kirkland Lake, Ontario

Electrical resistivity (rho-r), effective porosity (phi-E) and bulk density (delta-B) have been measured on nine diatreme-facies kimberlite samples and six limestone samples from the Kirkland Lake area. One purpose of this study is to provide data required forinterpretation of surface and airborne geophysical survey data. Another purpose is to determine if physical characteristics can distinguish between limestone xenoliths contained in these kimberlites and the source rock of the xenoliths.Results indicate that the values for delta-B (2.3-2.5 g/mL), phi-E (13-25%) and rho-r (30-470 Ohm-m) for these kimberlites are generally within the reported range for Canadian kimberlites, and are similar to those of the crater facies kimberlites. This implies relatively low delta-B and rho-r,and relatively high phi-E values. The values of delta-B (2.2-2.8g/mL), phi-E (4-22%) and rho-r (30-1.2x104 Ohm-m) for the limestones are generally within the reported range. The only limestone xenolith measured displays the largest phi-E and smallest rho-r values among thelimestones.
