The papers in this issue give a valuable set of views across the whole subject of research vessels, extending into considerations of the scientific systems carried on such vessels and of commercial vessels as platforms for research measurements. Some summary comments about the special nature of research ships as a class are given. These special features are essential factors in the urgently required planning and construction of new ships.
