This paper aims to compare teenagers’ use of someconversational discourse markers in Madrid and Buenos Aires, and isbased on the analysis of recordings of spontaneous conversations of youthlanguage in the Corpus of Adolescent Oral Language - project (COLA).From the perspective of variational pragmatics, the authors compare thediscourse markers, analyze the functions, determine the frequency, andthe proportion per thousand words. The gender question and the positionof the markers form part of the analysis. The result of the analysis revealsthat the variation of discourse markers is not exclusively determined orinfl uenced by the speaker’s characteristics, but also by the persons towhom the message is directed
