Le Déclin de l’intelligentsia de gauche en Irak

Durant les années 1940 et 1950, l’intelligentsia de gauche a joué un rôle remarquable dans la construction d’une culture irakienne vibrante, a contribué à la floraison de la littérature et des arts et a exercé une influence majeure dans les sphères politique et culturelle. Cet article se centre principalement sur les années 1960 quand, malgré deux coups d’État baassistes, l’atmosphère culturelle était clairement de gauche. La seconde moitié de la décennie a été marquée par un élan vers la gauche, par un esprit de rébellion au sein de l’intelligentsia et par des productions culturelles innovantes. Le contrôle du Baas sur la culture après 1968 et sa campagne contre le parti communiste irakien à la fin des années 1970, entre autres facteurs, ont conduit au déclin du PCI et à la réduction du rôle de l’intelligentsia de gauche. During the 1940s-1970s, the leftist intelligentsia played a prominent role in constructing a vibrant Iraqi culture, contributed greatly to the flourishing of literature and the arts, and exerted a great impact in the cultural and political spheres. This article focuses primarily on the 1960s, when, despite two Ba’thist coups, the cultural ambience was pronouncedly leftist. The second half of the decade was marked by a leftward momentum in oppositional politics, a spirit of rebellion among the intelligentsia, and innovation in cultural productions. The Ba’th control of culture after 1968 and its campaign against the ICP in the late 1970s, among other factors, led to the subsequent decline of the ICP and the diminished role of the leftist intelligentsia
