La conversion au christianisme, un mythe romantique

Il s’agit d’examiner la façon dont la littérature romantique française met en scène le motif de la conversion, le christianisme étant condition essentielle au romantisme. Les auteurs considérés sont Chateaubriand, Mme de Staël, Victor Hugo, théoriciens d’une conversion qui peut tenir au modèle paulinien ou au contraire se définir par le long cours des croisements et du progrès des civilisations. Quinet et Flaubert, pour Ahasvérus et La Tentation de saint Antoine, permettent de saisir les variations que prend le motif de la conversion dans le domaine proprement littéraire. Focusing on the relationship of Romanticism to christiany, the article concentrates on conversion as a pattern in romantic french literature. Chateaubriand, Mme de Staël, Hugo are considered as theorists of conversion understood according to the Paulinian model or, on the contrary, seen in the long run as the course of civilisation itself. Quinet and Flaubert (Ahasverus and La Tentation de saint Antoine) provide a textual field for studying the different forms of conversion in the literary sphere itself
