L’identité argentine ou la construction d’un mythe littéraire entre Europe et Amérique

Cet article propose une approche de quelques archétypes qui, jusqu’en Europe, ont contribué à construire une image un peu théâtrale et parfois floue de l’Argentin. Une image littéraire avant tout, mais paradoxalement, souvent proche de la réalité socioculturelle car l’identité du romancier latino-américain est souvent liée à un profond engagement qui se traduit par la description et l’analyse – philosophique, politique, historique, sociologique… - du réel. C’est en étudiant le portrait que les intellectuels du XIXème siècle dressent du gaucho, personnage emblématiquement fort mais aussi victime de toutes les manipulations idéologiques, que l’on voit comment l’identité argentine a été forgée autour d’une dichotomie civilisation-barbarie dont le mythe semble encore vivant dans l’Argentine d’aujourd’hui. L’article aborde ensuite le thème de l’immigration, facteur essentiel de la mutation de cette société et de son entrée dans le XXème siècle. Le portrait de l’Argentin de classe moyenne (groupe social qui distingue particulièrement l’Argentine du reste de l’Amérique latine) est ensuite dessiné plus en détail, mais à travers le miroir à la fois déformant et grossissant de l’écrivain Manuel Puig. Il est indéniable que l’imaginaire modèle la réalité. La littérature est certes un miroir déformant et contradictoire de la réalité mais elle appartient aussi à cette réalité. This paper focuses on some of the archetypes which have contributed to the construction of the rather theatrical and blurred picture of the Argentinian – including in Europe. Paradoxically enough, this literary image is not so far removed from the socio-cultural reality as the identity of the Latin-American novelist is often defined by his or her engagement with reality through (philosophical, political, historical and sociological) description and analysis. A study of the portrayal by 19th intellectuals of the gaucho – a figure known for his emblematic strength but also the victim of all manner of ideological manipulations – shows how Argentinian identity was constructed around a Civilization / Barbarity opposition, traces of which can still be found today. The paper then focuses on immigration, a key factor in the changes within Argentinian society and its inclusion in the 20th century. This is followed by a study of the portrayal of the middle class (which differentiates the country from the rest of Latin America) as seen through Manuel Puig’s idiosyncratic descriptions. By ‘imaging’ a nation, literature shapes ‘reality’ but, then, literature with all its manipulations of reality is also part of that reality. El autor de este artículo evoca algunos tópicos que, sobre todo en Europa, contribuyeron a la construcción de una imagen un poco teatral y borrosa de los argentinos. Una imagen esencialmente literaria, pero paradójicamente, muchas veces en conformidad con la realidad sociocultural : el novelista latinoamericano suele ser un intelectual comprometido y esta identidad se traduce, dentro de su obra, por la descripción y el análisis – filosófico, político, histórico, sociológico… – de la realidad. Estudiando el retrato que los intelectuales del siglo XIX hacen del gaucho, personaje emblemático fuerte pero también víctima de muchas manipulaciones ideológicas, se ve cómo la identidad argentina fue forjada a partir de la dicotomía civilización-barbarie cuyo mito parece todavía vigente en la Argentina de hoy. El tema que se estudia a continuación es el de la inmigración, factor esencial de los cambios de esta sociedad y de su entrada en el siglo XX. Luego, se hace un retrato más detallado del argentino de clase media (grupo social que, por su importancia, permite distinguir Argentina del resto de América latina), pero a través de la subjetividad del escritor argentino Manuel Puig.
