In Nonnus’ epic, Dionysus’ hand to hand combats against the three Indian chieftains, Oraontes, Deriadas and Morrheus, conclude in a manner that does not correspond with epic norms. Rather than being slain by the god, the adversary commits suicide, dies in an inexplicable way or simply disappears from the poem. This scenario, the author’s intention from the beginning, conforms to the figure Bacchus presents throughout the war against the Indians, that of a god at once propagandist and merciful.
