This paper describes the main elements of an institutional, material and cultural history of the official report during 19th century. By showing that the generalization of the official report is correlated to the professionalization of the police, one can understand that writing official reports seems to be a fundamental data of the construction of the professional identities. But reading official reports seems also to be an important data for the whole 19th century society. So could we suggest some new viewpoints to study the administrative writings
