It is usually considered, both in the social capital literature and the literature about trust, that interpersonal trust is a key element in social cooperation. In this article it is analyzed whether trust can foster cooperation in the absence of the State. It is concluded that in this situation it is not possible to form well-grounded expectations about other people’s trustworthiness, and, threfore, cooperation is not very likely
