The literary controversy between Lope de Vega and Pedro de Torres Rámila has not been addressed since the publication of Joaquin de Entrambasaguas’s pioneering study on the subject. The original Spongia (1617) went missing, and we only have the excerpts of the book reproduced by the authors of Expostulatio Spongiae (1618). The aim of this article is to rebuild Torres Ramila’s basic ideas on literary theory from the contents of such excerpts
