«Emphasis» is a characteristic phonological feature of Arabic. It refers to the pharyngeal coarticulation of certain consonants that spreads to neighbouring consonants and vowels. In this paper I undertake the analysis of numerous Iberoromance arabisms together with their etyma. The data provide evidence for the syllable being the defining scope of the propagation of emphasis in Andalusi Arabic; however, the word represents its maximum domain. The blockade of emphasis or its free spread to neighbouring syllables depend on syllable structure. Autosegmental Phonology and Feature Geometry permit the representation of emphasis in a transparent manner
