This article contributes to shed light on the ALPI history since its origins, with Menéndez Pidal and Navarro Tomás as leading figures, until its final days. The unpublished correspondence between Menéndez Pidal, Navarro Tomás, Amado Alonso, Sanchis Guamer, Rafael Balbín, Luis Felipe Cintra, Dámaso Alonso and Alonso Zamora provides evidence of all the ups and downs of the Atlas work before its publication
