This paper examines the Codex Telleriano-Remensis from a political perspective focusing on the period of Tepanec hegemony, which covers the first three rulers of Tenochtitlan, and of Tlatelolco. More specifically, our source offers a particularly interesting representation of the political ritual of Huitzilihuitl’s enthronement, a rite of passage that can be interpreted as overcoming the traditional-leader configuration, and the insertion of Tenochtitlan as subordinate tlatocayotl in the political structure of the Tepanec Empire with its capital in Azcapotzalco
