This article aims at showing two obsessions that can be found across the main autobiographical writings by Rousseau. First, the aspiration to what might be referred to as his external unity, that is, the consistency between what he believes to be and what it is like for others, once affirmed its ‘special’ natural goodness. With this purpose some texts of the Confessions and the Dialogues will be analysed. Secondly, there is his ongoing tension towards internal unity, embodied in the sense of his own existence, which will be prominently revealed through the Rêveries
