This article seeks to reflect on the utility and future of material available on the worldwideweb concerning the world of archives (principally state, national, and central archives) from the point of view both of research and teaching. We have not attempted an exhaustive list of what is available, instead drawing on the most relevant information at the present time, we have focussed our attention on the advantages and disadvantages of the resources offered by the new information technologies. In this essay we hope to consider the huge capability of the worldwideweb (Internet) as a virtual yet effective resource for undertaking historical research, at the same time as being a useful tool for bringing the world of historical documention closer to those studying history at university. The final part of this work is a consideration of the future evolution and trajectory of what we have come to call Virtual Archives
