This article addresses the fiscal strategies undertaken by the Portuguese political community during the War of the Restoration, which special attention to the tax known as the «military tenth». This tax was distinguished by being both general and proportional, since once it had been approved by the Cortes of 1641 it had to be paid by all estates in the kingdom, without exception, and in accordance with the established percentage. The conflicts and forms of resistance which these new fiscal demands set in motion in Portuguese politics have not been systematically studied before now; the following pages represent the first modern research on the topic
