In the social and cultural history of sport, the analysis of the establishment and development of associations is fundamental in clarifying the social articulation of modern sporting activity. Along with its role in regard to promoting physical exercise, the historical study of sporting associations can also reveal the kinds of social relation which are established and the evolution of these relations, and the ideological and socio-historical contexts in which they are embedded
