Sulpicius Severus uses in his Dialogi a series of exempla taken (in a schematic form) from biblical sources. An analysis of the ideological function of the narrator (as G. Genette defines it) shows his religious, moral and political aspects and how Sulpicius anticipates an exemplary use of his story about Martin. We see this possibility accomplished in the subsequent tradition
