<i>Veia: apud oscos dicebatur plaustrum</i> (P. F., 506,3)

In this paper it is suggested that in the Italic languages there are no examples of *ueg'ih, the traditional form supposed for uia. Both ueiari and ueia are simple graphic (and phonetic) vaiations of usual uiarii and uia respectively. The phonetical evolution and spelling which prove this hypothesis have numerous examples all over Italy since ancient times. Veia cannot be considered Oscan, according to Festus. It must be defined simply as Italic. Various reasons, however, led the author to consider uia as a loanword from Latin to Oscan-Umbrian. It is not impossible that the italian veggia derives directly from ueia, with semantic translation, but it seems more likely that its origin comes from the Latin veg ( h ) es
