According to the author diachronic analysis needs a synchronic examination of both the original and the terminal system of a linguistic process. In this study which combines the consideration of diachrony and synchrony it is fundamental to start with the terminal system because it allows to track back the dominant trend of the change. This approach is exemplified with the treatment of Indoeuropean aspirated voiced stops in Greek and Latin
