La matematización de España

The causes and consequences of a weak mathematical cultura in Spain along the centurias are reviewed in terms of several critical iniciatives concerning science policy. The attemps to overcome this anomaly by del “Junta de Ampliación de Edstudios” (1907) are described briefly, as well as the frustration of these iniciatives by the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939), and by the international isolation of the country along the 1940-1960 autarchy period. The onset of the recovery in the 60’s, the take off from 1983 on, and the facts determining the normalization of mathematical research in the frame of the “Ley de la Ciencia” (1986) are described and analyzed in some detail. Eventually, the results so far attained and the prospective of this process are assesed. Las causas y las consecuencias de una débil cultura matemática en España son revisadas en el contexto de algunas acciones de política científica históricamente significativas. Esa anomalía se intentó corregir a partir del inicio del siglo XX por intermedio de la Junta de Ampliación de Estudios (1907), cuya actuación se vio truncada por la guerra civil (1936-1939) y posterior período de autarquía (1940-1960). El resurgir iniciado a partir de 1960, el despegue a partir de 1983, y los factores que han propiciado la tendencia a la normalización de la investigación matemática en el marco de la Ley de la Ciencia de 1986 son descritos y analizados en detalle. Finalmente se presenta una valoración de resultados y de perspectivas de futuro
