doi:10.3906/sag-1003-691 Postoperative atrial fi brillation, oxidative stress, and infl ammation Mehmet ÖZAYDIN Abstract: Postoperative atrial fi brillation is the most common complication of cardiac surgery. It is associated with increased complication rates. Recent trials have suggested that infl ammation and oxidative stress have key roles in the pathophysiology of atrial fi brillation. Current evidence evaluating the use of antiinfl ammatory and antioxidant agents, including statins, corticosteroids, N-acetylcysteine, vitamin C, and fi sh oil, to prevent postoperative atrial fi brillation is promising. However, larger randomized, controlled trials comparing diff erent dose regimens are needed.
