This article explores various historical and geographical sources from medieval China to determine the extent of knowledge about early Islam amongmedieval Chinese intellectuals. With the help of a thematic analysis of thesesources (e.g. Jingxingji 經行記, Jiu Tangshu 舊唐書, Lingwai daida 嶺外代答, Zhufanzhi 諸蕃志, Yiyuzhi 異域志, Yingya shenglan 瀛涯勝覽,Mingshi 明史, Xiyang fanguo zhi 西洋番國志, Xingcha shenglan 星槎勝覽), I outline the Chinese knowledge of various Muslim religious topics,like prayers, dietary laws, festivals (Friday, Ramadan), the Quran, the GrandMosque and the Kaaba.
