The paper analyzes conceptual rapprochements between N. A. Klyuev and S. A. Yesenin in their understanding of the role of art (the chronological framework of the study is limited by 1919). The following stand out as the main ideas uniting the poets: art in its development should contribute to the formation and strengthening of the national cultural and historical tradition; national art implies convergence of Christianity and paganism, providing not only spiritual, but also a truly creative synthesis; art is a sacrificial path, implying suffering and dedication; an artist (poet) is a prophet and visionary deeply connected with the fate of the motherland, yet at the same time his mission is addressed to all mankind; a creator is searching to synthesize art and religion. The differences in Klyuev's and Yesenin's understanding of the main tasks of art are considered separately. For Klyuev, genuine art is sanctified by the moral values of Christian culture, the main of which is the path to spiritual transformation. For Yesenin, the dialectic of art is based on the dialogue of the idea of the “nodal ovary of nature with the essence of man” and the poet's belief in the fusion of the “other world with the visible world”. The study also pays special attention to the controversy of Klyuev and Yesenin over the boundaries of art.
