Underwater archaeology is a form of research which is conducted in a hostile environment and which requires those who practice it to exercise intense physical effort. Archaeologists and collaborators who make up the working team need to acquire and demonstrate adequate diving skills and to prove that they are underwater archaeology specialists by having a certificate or a license granted by authorized institutions. Scientific and submerged work activities require the use of some special devices, equipment, and means of transport, which the team members need to know how to use properly and safely.
