The paper defines that the loan portfolio can be formed by several types that depend on the purpose of the bank. The portfolio type is a portfolio characteristic based on the ratio of profit and risk. The main types of loan portfolio are specified by the authors. There are three stages that determine the process of forming a loan portfolio by the bank.The purpose of the paper is to study the concept of "loan portfolio" and justify the complementary components of the concept, which makes it possible to formulate a complex definition. It is justified that the loan portfolio is an instrument that allows you to manage the active operations of the bank, which are aimed at increasing the profitability, efficiency of activities achieved by providing loans in various areas of lending, taking into account the requirements of the credit policy of the bank and banking supervision bodies.The tendencies of changes in the banking sector due to the existing economic situation in Ukraine caused by the COVID-19 pandemic are investigated.
