We documented the actions and achievements of the Ichthyological Collection (CI) of the CentroInterdisciplinario de Ciencias Marinas, Instituto Politécnico Nacional (CICIMAR- IPN) during the last 18 years. In this period, the biological inventory was depurated, nomenclature was updated, and a digital database was developed and published online. Actions in the field of human resource training, lecturing, scientific research, extension and dissemination of research results are given in detail. The role of collections is discussed as wellas the current tendencies of the dissemination of scientific information from data bases.
